recent projects: warehouse conversion
Work on this apartment, in a building more than a century old, was virtually complete when it was purchased, but significant issues of layout and design had to be addressed to realise its true potential. High ceilings and prized water views were going to waste.
The new design concept was Japanese-influenced, including a contemplative garden and wet-edge bath. Original brick walls and beautiful bay windows were retained and two mezzanine levels were created. The extra space allowed the master bedroom to be re-sited on the upper level, with a Japanese bathhouse beneath.
The floors were raised 150mm to provide water views from every interior vantage point. The 25’ ceilings were painted black to achieve a sense of intimacy. The high ceilings also allowed for the addition of a fireman’s pole between levels – a feature delighting the children of the family.
Completely redesigned, the apartment is now a centre of holistic calm within a very urban environment.
